Dobrovo, 2 September 2020
With the exception of Saturday’s violent storms, this year’s weather has so far been kind to the winegrowers. In the light of this, the crop from 2020 is expected to be of good quality, although its quantity will be slightly lower than the average. Whereas the usual harvest produces around 7,500 tonnes of crop, the agronomists at Klet Brda are predicting that the family winegrowers of the largest producer and exporter of Slovene wines will this year bring in around 6,400 tonnes of grapes, depending on the weather conditions during the harvest.
The harvest of Pinot noir and Chardonnay, base wines for sparkling wines, started on Tuesday, 25 August, and continued during the week. Regular harvest starts today, 2 September, with Pinot grigio being the first variety harvested, according to the established order of ripening. The four hundred families within the cooperative winery will have finished most of the harvest by the end of September, while late varieties and special varieties for “super selection” program, growing on special terroir, will remain in vineyards until 10 October or longer.
“Along with Goran, who offers supervision and support to winegrowers throughout the year, I have been assessing the ripening of grapes daily, in the days leading up to the harvest. We are pleased with the results. Our winegrowers have fully embraced Klet Brda’s Guidelines on sustainable cultivation of grapes and are cultivating their vineyards accordingly. We use special clones of Pinot noir and Chardonnay as base for our sparkling wine. These varieties have been harvested last week and their must, which is already in the process of fermentation, is showing especially good balance and the right acidity, which makes me very happy,” reported Darinko Ribolica, oenologist at Klet Brda.
Price per kilogram of grapes ranges from EUR 0.40 and EUR 1.10, averaging at EUR 0.52, while special varieties will be priced even higher.
Due to Saturday’s storms, which fortunately have not affected the entire region, quantity of crops from certain plots will decrease by a third. We have already arranged special take-over of these grapes.
Nevertheless, the starting point for this year’s harvest is promising and all we wish for, at this point, are dry and sunny conditions during the harvest.
