The Quercus wine brand was designed and launched in 2000, and is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. On this occasion, at the beginning of this year, it also received a refreshed image. The name Quercus comes from the Latin name of an oak called »dob«, after which the village Dobrovo got its name. Klet Brda Winery has been operating in this village in Brda region since 1957, and this is where Quercus wines are matured under the watchful eye of our winemaker Darinko Ribolica. The Quercus brand was initially designed to be sold in the hospitality sector and the style of the wines was different – they were matured in oak barrels. When Quercus was launched on the market 20 years ago it had a two-piece label, which no other wine brand in Slovenia had at that time. Years later, after working with Master of Wine, Angela Muri, we created a new strategy of development for the Quercus brand and it was then, that Klet Brda Winery started this successful story of Quercus brand, which has a recognizably fresh, fruity and mineral character that is typical for Brda. Today, the Quercus line consists of 11 varieties and two sparkling wines.
Today, Quercus is the best-selling wine brand in Slovenia, and it is also popular among wine lovers in as many as 26 countries around the world, where you can find it in bars and restaurants, as well as in retail chains. Quercus Pinot Bianco for example, was sold in Young’s Pubs all across the UK for 3 years which was a great success for us. In addition, you can find Quercus Pinot Grigio at some very established restaurants in London.
In 20 years, Quercus has received over 200 medals and awards at domestic and international wine competitions. He was a champion among white and red wines, he received many gold medals for individual varieties and also some cuvees, which we sell mainly in foreign markets.

At Sommelier Wine Awards in the UK, Quercus Rebula 2019 received a bronze medal, and Quercus Cabernet Merlot 2018, which is sold only in the UK market, won a gold medal.
The quality of the Quercus wines, of course, starts in the selected vineyards of our 400 member families of winegrowers. The vineyards are planted on steep slopes and thus require a lot of manual labour. All the work is done by family members and friends, which enhances quality control. Seeing sustainability as the only right way forward, all of our vineyards follow the guidelines of integrated production of grapes.
If you contributed to the success of Quercus wines in any way in these 20 years, we sincerely thank you, and here’s to many more!
