Klet Brda has become the world’s first winery with Green Key eco-label and the first Slovenia Green Atraction.
On Tuesday, December 10, 2019, at the formal eco-label award ceremony, which took place at Vila Vipolže in Brda, Klet Brda was awarded the Green Key eco-label. In doing so, it entered the Green Scheme of Slovenian tourism and became Slovenia’s first recipient of the Slovenia Green Attraction label. The Green Key certificate is the leading standard for excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. This prestigious eco-label represents the companies’ commitment to comply, at their certified premises, with the strict standards set by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The Green Key eco-label ensures to all guests of the establishments with this certificate that they are contributing to the protection of the environment. The high environmental standards expected of these establishments are maintained through rigorous documentation and frequent audits. The Green Key eco-labels can be awarded to different tourist establishments and attractions, among which is also Klet Brda.
Wine tourism is becoming an ever more important aspect of our activities. At Klet Brda, guests from all over the world can experience the process of wine making – all the way from the vineyard to the bottle. “Our guests can learn about our history and they can see that viticulture has been present in Brda for over two thousand years. We show them how intensely connected with our land we are – how we take from it, and how we give back to it. This is true for every historic wine region in the world. A reflection of the land, wine tells a story of its origin and of people who made it. Cultivating vineyards and the tradition that has been passed down from one generation to the next is something that goes without saying for people from Brda. Visitors, especially those outside of Europe, find our wine story, so intertwined with history and terroir, fascinating,” concluded Silvan Peršolja, CEO of Klet Brda.
As the Doves association, the Green Key programme coordinator, stated in its explanation for the awarding of the Green Key certificate: “Klet Brda is intrinsically connected with its local environment, which it supports and includes in several of its activities. At Klet Brda wine shop, they sell various locally produced items, such as honey, marmalades, and lavender products. Furthermore, all the gifts they present their business partners are produced or created by local providers, which additionally supports the region. We were also impressed by their small museum of viticulture and wine making.”
At Klet Brda, the guiding principle in our day-to-day activities is a deep respect for nature and its cycles, as we believe that superior quality is born in the vineyard. Nature is our strongest ally, therefore, maintaining a clean and healthy environment is for us, living and working with nature, of quintessential importance.
