Harvest 2019 is here

Information at the start of 2019 grape harvest

Dobrovo, 5 September 2019

The 2019 grape harvest promises a high quality vintage, which will be slightly below average in terms of quantity. The agronomists of Klet Brda predict that the family vineyards of the largest producer and exporter of Slovenian wines, Klet Brda, will fill their wine cellars with approximately 6,800 tonnes of grapes, which is 10% less than the normal yield of about 7,500 tonnes.

We started the harvest for sparkling wines, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, on Friday, 30 September, and continued during the end of last week. We started our regular harvest on 4 September. Four hundred families, members of the cooperative, will complete most of the harvest by the end of September, while some special varieties will remain in the vineyard until the middle of October.

We expect this year’s harvest will be of high quality; however, it still depends on the weather during the harvest. We hope for moderately warm and dry weather, with temperatures up to 27° C, as the final quality of grapes depends on the favourable weather during harvest.

Darinko Ribolica, the oenologist at Klet Brda, said, “Wine growers welcomed the drop in temperature, as lower temperatures are more favourable for the vines and grape pickers. The lower night-time temperatures facilitate a better development of aromas. The first harvested varieties have distinct fruitiness, suitable acidity and moderate alcohol. If the September weather continues to be favourable, we can expect a very high quality of the 2019 vintage.”

Like last year, the price for a kilogramme of grapes will vary between €0.40 and €1.20. Last year, the average price for a kilogramme of grapes was €0.64, and exceeded €0.85 in the highest quality range. This year, we expect similar average prices, but the final price will depend on the quality of produce.

The harvest will once again be dedicated to strengthening our ties with foreign business partners. During the harvest, we will entertain business partners from the US and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and we just hosted buyers from the UK, which is becoming an increasingly important market for Klet Brda wines, in addition to Chine. “A comprehensive experience – from the vineyard, wine cellar, cuisine and culture – has for many years proven to be the most effective and direct promotion for wines, Brda, and Slovenia,” explains the general manager of Klet Brda, Silvan Peršolja.
