2019 – Another great harvest

Dobrovo, 1. 10. 2019

Harvest 2019 was very good, both in terms of quantity and quality

This year, we produced 6,300 tonnes of grapes – 15% less than the average projected annual harvest, which is 7,500 tonnes. Last year, when conditions were extremely favourably in all respects, we produced a record-breaking 9,540 tonnes of grapes. The reason for this year’s lower harvest were the low temperatures during blooming period and the hail in June.

The quality of this year’s harvest is very high. “The 2019 vintage is characterised by a highly detectable fruitiness, and moderate acidity and alcohols, so it promises lot,” briefly explained Darinko Ribolica, oenologist of Klet Brda.

Grape harvest

We started the harvest for the sparkling wines, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, on 30 August. Regular grape harvest started on 4 September. Four hundred families, members of the Klet Brda cooperative, will complete most of the harvest by the first week of October, while some special varieties will remain in the vineyard until the middle of the month.

This year, winegrowers were most pleased with Rebula. This was the top grape sort in terms of quantity, while its quality is extremely high. Merlot harvest was closest to average in terms of quantity, and closely followed Rebula. In general, oenologists are very pleased with red varieties, as the sunny and warm September allowed them to reach full physiological maturity, resulting in excellent red wines.

Like last year, the price for a kilogramme of grapes varies between €0.40 and €1.20. Last year, the average price for a kilogramme of grapes was €0.64, and exceeded €0.85 in the top quality range. This year, the average prices will be similar, while slightly higher in the top quality range.

Business partners’ visits

The harvest was once again dedicated to strengthening our ties with our business partners. We hosted buyers from the USA, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, and Great Britain, which, along with China, is becoming an increasingly important market for our winery. Experiencing the grape harvest in Brda, meeting local people, trying local food and discovering the beauty of Slovenia is always an unforgettable experience for our foreign business partners and distributers. They return home filled with memorable impressions, becoming ambassadors for Slovenia, its beauty, cuisine, and Slovenian wines – undoubtedly one of the key reasons for sales growth on foreign markets in recent years.

Successful cooperation with Ralf Schumacher

A special guest to this year’s harvest for the press was the former Formula One driver, Ralf Schumacher. The brother of legendary Michael Schumacher and also a six-time Grand Prix winner, he owns a restaurant with Mediterranean cuisine, Schumachers, in Bergheim, near Koln in Germany. As a businessman, he regularly visits prestigious restaurants; and it was Rebula from Klet Brda, served in one of the Salzburg restaurants, that impressed him so much that he decided to visit us.

After the first contact, he was so impressed with Rebula that he proposed a deeper cooperation. And his excellent experience with Rebula led him to creating his own label with his name. During his second visit, he wanted to expand the selection of wines, thus creating the brand Schumacher Selection.

He chose a traditional sparkling wine, fresh white wines Rebula and Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay aged in barriques, light Pinot Noir, distinct Cabernet Franc, and finally a Brda specialty, Picolit, a traditional dessert wine from our wine cellar. The wines are available at select restaurants (also with Michelin stars) and wine stores at cosmopolitan venues, such as Saint-Tropez and St. Moritz, and will also accompany the end of the ADAC GT Masters season.

We are overjoyed that Klet Brda wines stand side by side with the best wines in the world, as proven by the many international awards and medals that we win each year. The highest recognition of our quality is undoubtedly the satisfaction of our customers, who become ambassadors of our wine cellar, Rebula, Brda and the entire Slovenia.
